Pure
Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils:
The Young Living Standard
So
what does it mean to have pure therapeutic
grade essential oils? It means
the oil delivers as many of the fragile and
original aromatic compounds as possible. As
part of Young Living’s internal standards
of quality, there are four areas in which special
attention is always given:
Plants
Preparation
Purity
Potency
As
you will see, each of these provides a significant
impact on the way Young Living’s products
are developed from seed to seal.
Plants
It all begins with identifying exactly the right
genus and species of plants and giving them
exactly what they need to thrive. Young Living
essential oils are produced from an array of
high-quality herbs and flowers including lavender,
sage,
German
chamomile, thyme,
tarragon, and bergamot,
all of which are grown according to specific
internal and industry standards. Young Living
carefully selects and cultivates only the species
of herbs and plants that will produce the most
active and widest array of constituents. (Also

Plants
are grown on uncontaminated land, and the soil
is enhanced with a mix of organic mulch, manure,
enzymes, and trace minerals. Young Living farms,
established throughout the United States and
around the world, ensure that only the best
plant life is grown for Young Living products.
Preparation
Gary developed his proprietary distillation
methods by combining knowledge of history’s
finest distillers, modern technology, and decades
of trial and error. Before harvesting takes
place, there must be an understanding of the
plant and the factors critical to producing
therapeutic grade essential oils.
From
species to species, there are intricacies that
must be understood to maximize quality and yield.
Some are best harvested at day and some at night;
some plants are best distilled immediately after
cutting while some need to sit for a day or
two. By having distillers on-site at each farm,
harvested herbs can be monitored, measured,
and then distilled at exactly the right time.
Part of this intricate system includes analyzing
Brix levels with a refractometer. Readings provide
a measurement of the sugar content, which is
indicative of the amount of oil present.
Using
only pure water free of heavy metals and contaminants,
Young Living has a proprietary, stainless steel
distillation process that uses low temperature
and low pressure to foster the preservation
of plant properties, capture the pure essence
of the plant, and maintain the quality of the
oils. Variations in the distillation process
can result in a reduction or destruction of
product quality.
It
is not unusual for commercial oil processors
to increase pressure, heat, and reduce distillation
times in order to cut costs. This practice,
however, results in the elimination of key components
necessary to make an essential oil fragrant,
distinctive in texture, and potent. Although
the product may be considered pure, it lacks
the elaborate chemistry required to be touted
as therapeutic-grade. At Young Living, extreme
measures are taken to ensure our high standards
are never sacrificed.
Purity
Core to our philosophy is guaranteeing the 100
percent purity of our essential oils. This means
two things: first, the product contains nothing
but essential oil and has not been cut or diluted,
and second, there are no dangerous substances
like heavy metals, pesticides, or chemical fertilizers.
This purity must be achieved naturally through
the use of quality plants and meticulous preparation,
and not through ultra-refinement.
Additionally,
we seek to create an educational forum regarding
the differences between pure therapeutic-grade
essential oils and synthetic, perfume-grade
oils, which are often promoted as being pure.
The process of recognizing such “knock-offs”
is important for your pocketbook and even more
important for your health as adulterated oils
do not offer the same benefits.
Potency
To guarantee Young Living’s products exceed
current international ISO and AFNOR standards,
and meet our own high internal standards for
potency, Young Living rigorously analyzes the
finished oil’s phytochemical profile with
the most sophisticated methods available to
ensure it delivers optimal amounts of every
key plant compound. The result is a therapeutic-grade
product that matches our extensive historical
database of product quality.
Are
Your Essential Oils Therapeutic Grade?
(a checklist)
Do
the oils “feel” natural with a subtle
fragrance that is rich and delicate? Does
the fragrance of the oil change from bottle
to bottle? Does
the supplier send each batch of oils through
at least five different quality analyses before
distribution? Are
the tests performed by independent labs? Are
the distillation facilities on-site? Does
the supplier use low pressure and low temperature
to distill the oils? Are
the distillation cookers made from stainless
steel? Does
the supplier send representatives to inspect
the farm and distilleries? Do
representatives ensure that no synthetic chemicals
are used in any of the cultivation, harvesting,
and distillation processes?
Such
distinctions make Young Living essential oils
pure, therapeutic-grade, and the finest quality
available.
