Essential Oral Health“One of the ceaseless wonders of the world is the power of a smile.” Malcolm Forbes How often has someone left us feeling better because he or she smiled at us? Smiling is an expression of satisfaction, support, and affection. Everyone wants to put forth their brightest smile and look their best, but sometimes poor oral health gets in the way of achieving that beautiful, healthy smile. The "Surgeon General's Report on Oral Health," released on May 25, 2000, emphasized that dental health is important to overall health. In addition, the News-Medical website (www.news-medical.net) reported on May 1, 2004, "America's seniors suffer a disproportionate burden of oral disease ... and these issues will be exacerbated as the elderly population grows. While a greater percentage of seniors retain their teeth than ever before, they still have significant oral health problems, which can reduce their quality of life and threaten their well-being." From childhood to adulthood, good oral health is essential. Efforts to eliminate oral bacteria and provide optimum oral health led researchers to investigate the use of essential oils in dentistry as early as 1987.1 Young Living entered the oral health market in about 1997 and became the first company to create an essential oil mouthrinse without alcohol and synthetic additives. Today, one of Young Living's essential oil-mouthrinse competitors is the industry giant Listerine®. Through the deep pockets of Listerine's parent company, Warner-Lambert, important research was conducted. Several studies came to a surprising conclusion: rinsing with an essential oil-enhanced mouthrinse was "at least as good" as dental floss for the control of gingivitis.(1,2) Another study published in the American Journal of Dentistry concluded, "adjunctive use of an EO-containing mouthrinse provides a clinically significant and meaningful additional benefit in reducing plaque and gingivitis."(3) More research showed that to be effective against periodontal disease, an oral antiseptic must be active against a wide array of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Data show that "essential oil and chlorhexidine mouthwashes have the broadest antimicrobial effects.”"(4) Actually, the chemical chlorhexidine is slightly more effective than essential oils, but comes with the unpleasant side effects of staining teeth and altering taste perception for up to several hours after rinsing. Most toothpastes and mouthrinses available today contain harmful chemicals that may have long-term negative effects as they are absorbed into the blood. Reading the label on Listerine mouthrinse warns parents that children under twelve should not use it. If more than what is used for rinsing is swallowed, consumers are told to "get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away." The mouthrinse is sweetened with Sucralose® (also known as Splenda®, a sugar that is chlorinated) and saccharin, which contains food coloring and is 21.6 % alcohol. Listerine's new toothpaste (Essential Care™) also provides some interesting label information. When ingredients are listed, the "essential oils" turn out to be constituents of essential oils: thymol, eucalyptol, methyl salicylate, and menthol. Are these constituents from actual essential oils or are they synthetically derived? (Listerine's mourhrinse also has constituents listed as essential oils.) Listerine's new toothpaste also contains PEG-32, sodium lauryl sulfate, and saccharin. The $30 tube GOSMILE® toothpaste favored by Hollywood types uses essential oils in its formula (not constituents) but also has saccharin and propylene glycol. Young Living's toothpastes and mouthwashes are enhanced with therapeutic-grade essential oils and contain only pure, natural, safe, and effective products. On the cutting edge of oral health science and using a full complement of essential oils, YLs Dentarome® Ultra includes not only the bacteria-killing Thieves@ blend, but also the essential oils of peppermint, thyme, Eucalyptus globulus, and wintergreen. This power-packed formula is bursting with benefits. With the mouthwash built into it, this advanced-formula toothpaste cleans the mouth, freshens breath, and whitens teeth. Instead of silica that can scratch teeth, Dentarome Ultra has calcium carbonate in the finest mesh known to gently clean and whiten teeth without stripping away tooth enamel. No artificial dyes or coloring are used, and the sweeteners used are all-natural stevia and xylitol. Xylitol is a naturally occurring, low-calorie sugar with anticariogenic (anti-cavity) properties. A study published in the Journal of the California Dental Association stated that "commercial xylitol-containing products may be used to help control rampant decay in primary dentition."(6) Dentarome® Plus toothpaste contains the antiseptic agents of thymol and eugenol, found in clove and thyme essential oils, along with odor-absorbing baking soda and Thieves. For those with sensitive gums, Dentarome® toothpaste contains an exclusive formula of natural, plant-derived ingredients such as vegetable glycerin and ionic trace minerals, and the essential oil of peppermint to leave the mouth fresh, fragrant, and clean. Because caring for children's teeth and teaching them good oral health habits is every parent's concern YL created KidScents® toothpaste, a 100% safe, fluoride-free toothpaste that is perfect for all ages. It is all-natural, and is especially great as a training toothpaste during the crucial first years while children develop their primary teeth. Young Living's essential oil-mouthwash, Fresh Essence Plus™, is truly the ultimate in oral hygiene. Along with the unparalleled bacteria-killing action of Thieves® essential oil blend, Fresh Essence Plus has peppermint, spearmint, and vetiver essential oils. This mouthrinse doesn't have alcohol, synthetic dyes, artificial flavors, or preservatives. What it does have is a patented time-release liposome technology and all that essential oil power! W J. Loesche, Ph.D., at the University of Michigan's Microbiology and Immunology School of Medicine, said, "Maintaining good oral health should receive the highest priority for a healthy life."(7) Put the power of Young Living is oral health products to work for you!
