Liver Health - A Choice of Life or Death: Part 2Improving Liver HealthWith the hundreds of functions attributed to the liver, it is imperative to pay close attention to liver health, The following liver program may be beneficial if you have symptoms of sluggish liver or if you simply want to support normal liver function. 1. Determine the substances that may be detrimental to normal liver activity, and eliminate these from your life. For example, if you are a professional house painter or a cabinet finisher, you may need to do all that you can to use air filters and supplements that protect and provide added support for the liver. Other items that may be toxic to the liver include fried foods, alcohol, sodium lauryl sulfate (topically or internally), chloroform, excessive or continued use of aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or certain prescription medications (ask your pharmacist), long term usage of tricyclic antidepressants, the food preservative BHT, excessive animal protein, overuse of vitamins A or para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), and cottonseed oil. 2. Cleanse the bowel by following the Master Cleanse (see bottom) for at least three days prior to the liver cleanse protocol. It will be of little benefit to perform a liver cleanse if the bowel is congested or toxic. Liver toxins would merely circulate and have to be reprocessed by the liver. Proper elimination is always important in any kind of cleansing program. If the Master Cleanse is too rigorous, instead you may drink one tablespoon of psyllium seed powder dissolved in eight ounces of water between dinner and bedtime. 3. After your cleanse, eat a diet that gives your liver a chance to rest. Proper diet cannot be overemphasized when trying to improve liver health. We often tax our livers to maximum capacity by poor food choices. The following dietary suggestions will offer a lighter load for the liver. Eat many of these foods raw or lightly steamed. If you continue the diet for longer than a week, you may cook more of the foods by baking, steaming, or another method other than frying or grilling with charcoal. Eliminate for at least one week:
All refined sugars Eat:High-Quality Carbohydrates
Small amounts of naturally sweetened yogurt or kefir (limit to 1/2 cup
per day) Spices
Ginger, cayenne, mustard, cinnamon, members of the onion family, turmeric,
and cumin High-Quality Fats (choose one of the following)
Flaxseed oil (l tablespoon twice per day) You may think that this much fat is excessive. However, the gamma linolenic acid from flaxseed oils and from other sources such as evening primrose oil is reported to trigger fat burning. Flaxseed oil also helps satisfy hunger. WaterSpring or filtered water; to determine the proper amount, take half of your weight and drink that many ounces of water. For instance, if you weigh 200 pounds, drink 100 ounces of water a day. You will experience more visits to the restroom at first. Remember that cleansing involves ridding the body of waste. Water increases the need to urinate and increases your ability to sweat. The kidneys play an important role in toxin elimination. Sweeteners
Blue Agave
(small amount) Lean Protein (only after first week)
Organic chicken or turkey You may stay on this diet for as long as desired. It is nutritionally balanced and contains a variety of foods. The longer you practice these good health guidelines, the better. If you stray from this diet, be positive and get back on track the very next meal. Many people despair when they falter and completely give up. Be kind to yourself and simply begin again. Remember, it is your health that you want to improve. You choose to eat well. 4. Upon arising, drink an eight-ounce cup of water with the juice of half a lemon or one drop of lemon essential oil. This is an old-fashioned but effective remedy. Lemon contains limonene, which supports liver protection and detoxification. 5. Upon arising and just before bed, consume a small amount of a high-quality fiber product. This will help flush toxins from the system and keep the bowel moving. (Amount may vary with individuals. If you take higher doses, be sure to increase the amount of water proportionately.) 6. Consider the following liver supporting foods and supplements. Choose them according to your needs, rotating them occasionally. Exact amounts are dependent on factors such as weight and age. You may follow suggested supplement doses listed on labels or visit with a health professional to determine the exact amounts specific to your needs, particularly when dealing with serious conditions: Wolfberries and wolfberry juiceWolfberries and wolfberry juice in numerous clinical studies are reported to possess a number of actions that lead to longevity, including being protective and supportive to the liver. Research indicates that the antioxidant content and ingredients such as cerebrosides, pyrroles, and zeaxanthins found in wolfberries are highly protective, even more so than the notable herb milk thistle for normal liver function.(2) Your first line of defense for improving liver function would be the Chinese wolfberries, like those found in NingXia Red . * It is recommended to consume two ounces per day, straight or diluted. It can also be mixed and taken with fiber. It makes sense that wolfberries would be liver supportive because high amounts of antioxidants are required for proper liver performance. Wolfberries score highest as an antioxidant food. Studies also show that wolfberries support and improve eye function. This is an interesting connection, as Oriental medicine teaches that liver health affects vision. Organic rice seed branOrganic rice seed bran, the best source of squalene, is a substance studied for its abilities to protect against abnormal cell growth in the body. Gamma oryzanol, another main component of rice seed bran, has been found to be very effective in stopping the oxidation of cholesterol.(4) JuvaPower® is a good source of organic rice seed bran. SpinachSpinach leaf powder is rich in iron and chlorophyll, both shown to build the blood. According to Healing With Whole Foods by Paul Pitchford, spinach is cleansing to the blood and a facilitator of proper bowel and kidney action. Also high in vitamin A, spinach is a rich source of antioxidants. TomatoesTomatoes tonify the stomach and cleanse the liver, and have a general detoxification action on the entire body. According to Chinese medicine, tomatoes relieve liver heat, which is accompanied by high blood pressure, red eyes, and headaches.(5) Although tomatoes are acidic, after digestion, they are reported to alkalize the blood.(6) BeetsBeet root has a long tradition of benefiting the liver. Beets are also reported to benefit those with constipation.(7) Flax seedFlax seed bran is higher in antioxidants and lignans than regular flaxseeds. (8,9) The lignans in flaxseed protect the liver from becoming overburdened by toxins. (10) Over fifty peer-reviewed clinical studies show that lignans also prevent cellular mutations. (11) Oat seed bran, a soluble fiber, is high in beta-glucans (polysaccharides), which may help regulate glucose and lower cholesterol. (12) Beta-glucans also activate white blood cells in the body. (13) BroccoliBroccoli florets are a high source of pantothenic acid and vitamin A, have more vitamin C than citrus, and are a natural source of sulfur, iron, and B vitamins.(14) Broccoli is also shown to contain sulphoraphane, an antioxidant that supports cardiovascular health, normal eye function, and protects against abnormal cell growth.(15) CucumberCucumber fruit counteracts toxins and cleanses the blood, according to Pitchford. Psyllium seedPsyllium seed husks are valuable for cleansing the colon. Holistic health professionals believe that in order to have a healthy liver, one must cleanse the colon. Psyllium seed husks are found in the supplements JuvaPower® and ICP . Dill, ginger, fennel and moreDill leaf, ginger root, L-taurine, anise seed, fennel seed, aloe vera, and anise seed all have nourishing, protective properties necessary for normal liver function. They may also aid in digestion. Choline bitartrateCholine bitartrate, according to animal studies, is a supplement important for protecting against fatty liver. (16) It is also shown to help improve brain function and development.(17) In his book, Total Renewal, Dr. Frank Lipman recommends 500 mg of choline per day. InositolInositol plays a role in the movement of fats out of the liver. (18) It also helps the liver rid itself of bile. Inositol, in its active form, is also helpful in a number of conversion processes that take place in the liver. Some research shows inositol may be used when treating depression.(19) L-cysteineL-cysteine is a component in the production of glutathione, the powerful antioxidant that protects and assists with liver function.(20) DL-methionineDL-methionine is another important component in producing glutathione. Glutathione is important in the liver's ability to break down toxins. Oregon grape rootOregon grape root exerts a strong tonic activity on the liver and gallbladder. It is shown to have a laxative action, which safely helps those who experience constipation.(21) Dandelion rootDandelion root is a hepatic and cholagogue, which is helpful for inflammation and congestion of the liver and gallbladder.(22) Lipoic AcidLipoic Acid is a potent antioxidant and is an effective supplement to support proper liver function. The supplement Immune Tune is a combination of ingredients that includes alpha lipoic acid and other powerful antioxidants, such as curcuminoids, which have anti-inflammatory properties and are supportive and protective to the liver. Essential OilsGeranium essential oil is known to stimulate the function of the liver. (23) German chamomile essential oil, in animal studies, regenerated liver tissue. (24) This form of chamomile is also known for its anti-inflammatory and healing properties. Rosemary essential oil is reported to detoxify the liver and gallbladder. (25) Helichrysum essential oil contains anti-inflammatory sesquiterpenes, is calming to the system, and contains regenerating ketones. It also possesses pain-reducing qualities.(26) This essential oil is a beneficial addition to any formula and is helpful when combined with other liver supporting supplements. The essential oils listed may either be taken as supplements or rubbed directly on the skin in the area where the liver is located. Additional supplements to investigate include milk thistle, a high-quality turmeric, N-acetylcysteine, aloe vera juice, B vitamins, and magnesium. 7. Digestive enzymes are an important addition to any program that involves cleansing. They may be particularly important for people with digestive problems that can occur when the liver is not functioning optimally. Additional enzymes taken between meals are believed to be beneficial for eliminating toxins from the system. 8. Apply a generous amount of your favorite essential oil noted for its liver supporting qualities, or use an essential oil blend on the skin in the liver area. Cover with a moist, warm towel. Cover this with plastic and then cover with another dry towel. Allow this covering to stay in place for at least an hour. 9. Drink a green drink daily. This may be made fresh at home or purchased in the powdered form at a health food store. Barley grass and wheat grass are particularly beneficial when cleansing. Spirulina is also a good choice. If you decide to take VitaGreen , take at least eight capsules per day. 10. Work to resolve anger issues, frustrations, and long-term stress. This may be accomplished through meditation, prayer, and possibly the help of a trained professional. Continued negative emotions have a devastating effect on the liver. Try this program for one week. You will notice a difference in your energy levels and in how you feel. Depending on your individual needs, you may want to elicit help from a friend or spouse. This program is not designed to treat serious liver problems, but is intended only for liver support. The benefits of improving your lifestyle are truly astounding. Don't shortchange yourself when it comes to caring for the liver. It cannot be overstated that optimal liver health is a matter of life and death. Taking proper care of this vital organ is your greatest investment, not only in longevity, but also in energy, vitality, and quality of life. Live long and well by taking good care of this remarkable organ, the liver. These suggestions are a guide for those wishing to make changes in their current diet and lifestyle. It is not intended to replace professional care for a serious disease. A Chinese Perspective on Liver HealthThe Chinese created an intricate medical system based on the philosophy of yin and yang, terms used to express opposites. By bringing these opposites closer to balance, health is achieved. This method of healing addresses the causes of disease rather than symptoms. Traditional Chinese medicine has made a huge comeback in the past twenty years as is evidenced by increased numbers of practitioners all over the United States. The liver, according to Chinese medicine, is associated with the emotion of anger.(27) According to Master Herbalist Ron Teeguarden, a blocked liver stunts a person's creativity or the ability to express it and results in frustration. Long-term suppression builds liver tension, which eventually turns to anger or even rage. Teeguarden explains that anger is not always directed at the cause but in a direction that puts up the least resistance.(28) A classic example is a man being mistreated on the job and bringing his anger home and taking it out on the family This may be one reason that most religious traditions warn against harboring negative feelings and thoughts toward others. Teeguarden also explains that excessive ambition can also result in frustration, anger, and depression. According to Chinese tradition, excessive anger shows a definite liver imbalance. Emotional frustration or inappropriate or extreme mood changes indicate a possible liver "Qi" disharmony. In addition to excessive anger, a liver problem can show up as dizziness, chest congestion, a bitter taste in the mouth, neck tension, and pain in the upper abdomen and right side. In Chinese medicine, the liver rules the tendons, ligaments, and muscles in the body. Tendon health is manifest in the nails. Liver disharmonies may cause the nails to be thin, brittle, and pale. Painful or stiff joints accompany the nail condition. When the blood in the liver is plentiful, the tendons are supple and the nails appear pink and moist.(29) The liver has a special relationship to the function of the eyes. The Nie Jing, an ancient Chinese medical text, says, "When the liver is harmonized, the eyes can distinguish the five colors," and "When the liver receives blood, the eyes can see." In Chinese medicine, many eye disorders are attributed to poor liver function.(30) Anger and toxic substances will cause the eyes to become red, as will a lack of sleep. Both harm the blood and affect the liver.(31)
A healthy liver creates a smooth flow of energy throughout a person's
body. When the liver is in harmony, a person is free of stress or tension.
When out of balance, the hundreds of intricate biochemical processes are
disrupted, causing a long list of mental and physical problems.(32) Master Cleanse Program for Colon DetoxificationThis cleanse helps remove toxins that are created from a poor diet, from environmental toxins, and from cellular metabolism. It is impossible to cleanse and heal the liver without supporting bowel health. The following recipe is particularly beneficial for cleansing the bowel. In addition to the following lemon drink, an herbal laxative, a powerful digestive enzyme supplement, and additional water are recommended. Eat no other foods while cleansing. Master Cleanse Recipe
½ squeezed lemon or 2 Tbsp. pure lemon juice or 1 drop lemon essential
oil Stir until blended; ten glasses (8 oz each) per day is recommended. You may drink pure spring water in addition to your lemon drinks. Continue this program for three to ten days. At the end of your cleanse, slowly incorporate vegetable broths back into your diet. Following the day of broths, you may introduce a few raw fruits and vegetables. Eat only small amounts of food immediately after cleansing. Large portions are extremely hard on the digestive system and cause discomfort due to gas and bloating. Eat only healthy foods. Eating the same diet that you ate before the cleanse defeats your progress toward improving health. Notes: *These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. My very creative 17yo girl superglued three fingers~ not only did she glue these fingers together (from the second knuckle down), but they were 100% attached to the shell she was working on... Looking through the oil cabinet, I deceided to go w/ Animal Scents Ointment. Using a toothpick as a mini saw, sliding it sideways between skin & the shell, she was freed, with skin in tact and no pain...then we did the same thing between each finger ... it was quite impressive...and fast working too. I'd keep ASO in my house even if I didn't have animals...I use it on the small of my back, base of my spine, and tail bone for pain and tightness (alone or to lock in the base oil) Great for a callous too! It's very soothing and definitley not just for the four-legged. See you in Utah, Linda Berwind This information is intended for educational purposes only.
